lawrence is at the pentagon. chris, i don't even know where to begin because there's so much to talk about. let's start with general allen. what's the implications of this -- of him being brought in to petraeus scandal and what has he said about it? >> so far, from what we've heard from defense officials, soledad, john allen has denied any wrongdoing in this matter. what is the matter at hand is on sunday the fbi notified the pentagon that they had 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails, which contained inappropriate contact between general john allen, and jill kelley. yesterday, secretary panetta asked that john kelley -- or john allen's nomination to be the head of nato be pulled back and put on hold while the inspector general starts to dig through all of these pages to find out exactly what happened. here's how it all connects. general john allen was stationed in tampa when he was at u.s. central command. so was general david petraeus. jill kelley worked as sort of a social liaison with a lot of the commanders there. in fact, she's been -- won awards for her work with some of the military f

"the new york times" is now reporting this morning that the investigation actually began some months ago. but, again, the questions continue to mount. it wasn't until election night that the director of national intelligence, james clapper, was informed that this was all going on. the white house informed the next day,and the president the day after that. so how you have an fbi investigation, which whatever went on did involve looking into the matters of general david petraeus, your cia director, and the president isn't informed. this is one of the key questions congress, the congressional committee's concerned, they weren't informed. so expect to see a lot more about this for the next many days. >> barbara, let's talk a little bit more about that. as you mentioned the white house wasn't notified until 5:00 p.m. on election night. the president wasn't told until the thursday after election day. house and senate intelligence committees weren't told until last week. i kn

. overnight the pentagon announced allen's nomination to be commander of nato has been delayed and the nomination of his successor in afghanistan speeded up. after military officials announced that 20,000 to 30,000 pages of potentially inappropriate e-mails connected allen to jill kelley, the woman who had first complained to the fbi about harassing e-mails traced to paula broadwell, petraeus' biographer and acknowledged mistress. allen, who is married, denies any wrongdoing, and for now remains commander in afghanistan as the investigation continues. monday night a team of fbi agents methodically collected boxes and bags of materials from the broadwell home. officials say they wanted to be extra thorough in completing the investigation into whether broadwell had violated a cyber stalking or cyber bullying statute by sending anonymous e-mails to kelley. petraeus is not under investigation. kelley, the target of the harassing e-mails now linked to allen is a surgeon's wife, mother of three and family friend of the petraeuses, a friendship that grew out of kelley's volunteer work
. cnn's barbara starr is following that story from the pentagon. good morning. >> good morning, soledad. well, look, at least at this point, there's no indication publicly of a national security breach. but that doesn't mean the questions aren't growing. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are questioning the timing behind the revelation. house majority leader eric cantor said an fbi employee told him in october about the petraeus affair. by that time an fbi investigation was already under way. the fbi told the director of national intelligence james clapper on election night, according to a senior u.s. intelligence official. the white house says it was notified the day after the election, and the president the following day. that doesn't make sense to house homeland security chairman peter king. >> this seems to have been going on for several months yet now it appears they're saying that the fbi didn't realize until election day that general petraeus was involved. it just doesn't add up. >> "the new york times" reports the fbi actually started its investigation late this summer. the h
until now has been seen by many as the woman behind the man. our pentagon correspondent barbara starr spent some time with holly petraeus. barbara, first off, what kind of a woman is holly petraeus? >> well, as a correspondent covering military affairs, i have run into mrs. petraeus professionally. she is a formidable woman, and quite an expert in her own right, ted. she works in the area of consumer finance protection for military families. she worked for a long time for the better business bureau. now works inside the federal government and her area is predatory lending, financial practices, financial health for young military families. this is something i've talked to her about. this is something she is an expert in. she a few weeks ago gave a briefing here in the pentagon to the press corps. she may not be known much outside of washington, but inside the circle of military families, very, very highly respected. >> yeah, i read today she was one of those generals' wives that was accessible and part of the regular folks living day to day. today we heard that david petraeus wants to

the pentagon. we're hearing so far there have been no official findings that broadwell broke any laws or engaged in criminal activity. why suspend her security clearance? >> well, you know, fran townsend is reporting just that, john, that all the indications are, from the laumt forces she's spoken to, not egregious violation. broadwell is a reservist in military intelligence with the army. and inside the military, a violation, even if it's so-called minor, of handling classified information, especially when you're a military intelligence analyst is quite serious. yes, the army has suspended her security clearance. i want to read to you the statement that the army put out. the army said, quote, the army has been cooperating with federal law enforcement authorities in this matter and those actions are ongoing. appropriate actions with regard to this officer's clearance and access have been taken. so now what we know is the military is also involved in this. analyzing what is going on, pulling broadwell's security clearance, at least for now. she is in the position of having to demonstra

. but the pentagon is investigating thousands of documents and e-mails, some of them were apparently flirtatious. turns out both allen and petraeus stepped in to help kelley's twin sister, natalie, in a custody battle with her ex-husband. both generals wrote letters on behalf of the sister. here's a photo of petraeus with the twin sisters. petraeus wrote to the court quote, we have on many occasions observed natalie and her son, including when we hosted them in the kelley family for christmas dinner this past year. in each case we have seen a very loving relationship. we removed the son's name to protect his identity as a minor. there you have it. who's who in the scandal along with the latest twists and turns. there's a lot to discuss tonight. back to our breaking news, the fbi search last night, agents spent about five hours at paula broadwell's north carolina home, took away boxes full of documents and computers. we now have new details on why they were there. joining me now on the phone is cnn national security contributor, fran foutownsend. as you know, fran recently visited libya with her
